The participants of the World Construction Championship are divided into three categories:

1. Participating organization are represented by the specialists employed by the companies having concluded participation contracts with the Operator. They represent their organizations.

2. Independent members are those specialists employed by the companies having no participation contracts with the Operator. They act on their own account.

3. The Student League is represented by the students of specialized universities and colleges.

The rules are same for all the participants. The prize fund differs according to participants’ categories.

INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION

Multi-team nomination: “Best Construction Site” new

The MISSION and the RESULT: erection of a water exchange structure.

TIME TO EXECUTE THE MISSION: 2 days (17 hours).

EVALUATION: shall be carried out during the process of implementation of each mission milestone separately with regard to each nomination that is a part of the multi-team nomination, and shall be based on visual and dimensional inspection, and following the standard operating procedures and safety measures. Achieved results referring to each nomination shall be summed up.

WINNER: a team that will achieve most of the scores after implementation of the mission and that will take the first place within the multi-team nomination rating.

Team nomination “Installation of Process Pipelines”

COMPETITORS: active company employees and students.

The team consisting of 4 specialists:

The RESULT: process pipeline structure.

TIME TO EXECUTE THE MISSION: 2 days (17 hours).

The MISSION of a construction management specialist

  • Module 1. Organization and management of installation works.
  • Module 2. Documentation maintenance.

Evaluation shall be carried out based on the requirements to managerial and engineering/ regulatory documentation, and detailed drawings.

The MISSION of process pipeline installation specialists

  • Module 1. Production of process pipeline elements and support details.
  • Module 2. Assembly of pipeline supports and pipeline elements into blocks.
  • Module 3. Mounting of a process pipeline section and further installation of the hanger-support system.

Evaluation shall be based on visual and dimensional inspection, and following the standard operating procedures (maintenance of geometrical parameters of produced details and arrangement of their correspondence to the requirements to welding, quality and detailed design documentation) and safety measures.

The MISSION of an electric welder of manual welding

  • Module 1. Manual argon arc TIG (tungsten-arc inert-gas) welding
  • Module 2. Manual shielded metal-arc welding (Manual Metal Arc – manual arc welding)
  • Module 3. Manual arc welding of hanger-support systems.

Evaluation shall be based on visual and dimensional inspection, and following the standard operating procedures (adjustment of welding equipment, preparation of welding materials, keeping the welding technology, assuring of size accuracy, checking for defects) and safety measures.

EVALUATION: shall be carried out during the technological process (according to the specified module sequence) with regard to implementation of each mission milestone separately. Achieved results referring to each qualification being a part of a nomination shall be summed up.

The RESULT: arrangement of the water exchange structure fitted with the formwork.

The MISSION of a construction management specialist

  • Module 1. Organization and management of construction works.

Evaluation shall be carried out based on the requirements to managerial and engineering/ regulatory documentation, and detailed drawings.

The MISSION of steel-fixers and concrete workers

  • Module 1. Reinforcement of framing and further installation of passages and built-in items.
  • Module 2. Installation of the formwork.

Evaluation shall be based on keeping of the standard operating procedures and quality of structure assembly (correspondence of the mounted reinforcement cage, installed built-in items and passages to the requirements of the detailed design documentation; arrangement of the quality of formwork assembly), as well as maintaining of the safety measures.

EVALUATION: shall be carried out during the technological process (according to the specified module sequence) with regard to implementation of each mission milestone separately. Achieved results referring to each qualification being a part of a nomination shall be summed up.

Individual nomination “Health and Safety”

COMPETITORS: labor safety specialists (active company employees, students, and independent competitors).

The MISSION

includes evaluation of professional risks, development of operating safety measures, providing of briefings, investigation of accidents, demonstration of first-aid treatment skills, assessment of applicability of personal protective equipment; and comprises the following modules to be implemented under a random sequence:

  • Module 1. Analyzing of the results demonstrated by the remote monitoring of the labor safety management system referring to performance of works within the construction site.
  • Module 2. Carrying out the inspection with regard to maintenance of the requirements to industrial safety while erecting a building structure (water exchange unit) with further photo recording of breaches and arrangement of improvement notices. Carrying out the analysis of the found breach discovered within the construction site, development of the suggestions on industrial safety improvement (making a presentation demonstrating photo records of the discovered breach, and making breach root causes clear with precise allocation of functional duties with regard to the related technical officers).
  • Module 3. Providing first aid to an injured person within a confined and tight space with his/her further evacuation.

EVALUATION: shall be carried out upon completion of each mission milestone and shall be based on visual/ dimensional inspection, and maintenance of ISO 45001 standard requirements and standard operating procedures.

Individual nomination “Non-destructive Testing”

COMPETITORS (active company employees and students).

Non-destructive testing specialists.

The MISSION

  • Module 1. Incoming control of parts and semi-finished products delivered to the construction site. Determination of the quality evaluation parameters and rejection criteria based on the results of the incoming visual and dimensional inspection. Arrangement of the incoming visual and dimensional inspection and making reporting documents.
  • Module 2. Control of the finished welded joints. Determination of the x-ray inspection parameters to be applied to welded joints of a steel structure. Determination of the quality evaluation parameters and rejection criteria based on the results of the incoming visual and dimensional inspection, and explanation of the presented x-ray images.

The RESULT: evaluation of the correspondence of process pipeline welded joints to the requirements of the technical project documentation.

TIME TO EXECUTE THE MISSION: 2 days (17 hours).

EVALUATION: Shall be carried out during performance of the works with regard to mounting of a process pipeline (according to the specified module sequence) and shall be based on completeness and correctness of the performed visual and dimensional inspection and explanation of the presented x-ray images. Performance of process operations, searching for deviations (defects), and providing of the obtained results.

Individual nomination: “Health and Safety”

COMPETITORS: labor safety specialists (active company employees, students, and independent competitors).

The MISSION

Team nomination: “Steel and Reinforced Concrete Structures Installation” new

COMPETITORS: active company employees

The team consisting of 7 specialists:

  • production and technical department engineer (1 person),
  • specialists dealing with installation of steel and reinforced concrete structures (2 persons),
  • electric welder of manual welding (1 person),
  • construction management specialist (1 person),
  • process pipelines installation specialists (2 persons).

The MISSION

The teams shall develop flow process charts, arrange installation jobs, produce metal structures using rolled steel grades for further arrangement of reinforced concrete structures according to the project and process documentation, and carry out installation.

  • 1 Module. Homework: development of the flow process chart.
  • 2 Module. Production of the metal structures based on the distributed drawing and developed flow process chart with further installation of those metal structures, mainly by means of bolt joints.

TIME TO EXECUTE THE MISSION: 2 days (17 hours).

A production and technical department engineer shall

  • Develop the flow process chart.
  • Check the correspondence of construction and installation works’ scope, as well as correspondence of structures to the requirements of the approved documentation, detailed design drawings, construction rules and regulations, standards, technical specifications, and labor safety norms.
  • Maintain the work completion log.
  • Take part in the handover of finished milestones and jobs.
  • Arrange the necessary technical documentation.

The MISSION of a production and technical department engineer

  • Module 1. Development of the process documentation (homework).
  • Module 2: Documentation maintenance.
  • Module 3: Arrangement of the incoming control of the detailed design documentation.
  • An installer of steel and reinforced concrete structures

    Shall produce metal structures with the use of rolled steel grades in order to make reinforced concrete structures in compliance to the current regulatory documents.

    Carries out installation of the released metal structures.

    The MISSION of an installer of steel and reinforced concrete structures

    • Module 1. Production and pre-assembly of metal structure pieces.
    • Module 2. Assembly of construction scaffolds.
    • Module 3. Installation of the pre-assembled metal structure elements.

    It is required to mount a metal service platform with the use of construction scaffolds according to the detailed design documentation and avoid any deviations in the process sequence. Then the finished product shall be scaled up to the maximum size. Main and auxiliary processes used during installation of the metal structures shall be mechanized. Strict compliance with the flow chart is required. Next milestone: demonstration of the finished structural element and its latest form according to the technical assignment together with the completed documentation (general works log and special works log).

    A process pipeline installation specialist

    Shall install the process pipeline with further mounting of shut-off valves and hanger-support systems.

    Shall control the quality of pre-welding assembly, arrange high-quality joints of metal structures within different spatial position, and maintains strict correspondence to the process and detailed design documentation.

    Shall organize and manage mounting works, as well as documentation maintenance during the mounting process.

    Individual nomination: “Manual Electric Welder” new

    COMPETITORS (active company employees, students, and independent competitors) – electric welders of manual welding.

    The MISSION

    A welder shall arrange high-quality metal joints within different spatial positions and strict correspondence to the process and detailed design documentation.

    • Module 1. Shielded metal arc welding of test samples.
      It is required to assemble and weld test samples.
      Quantity of test samples: 2 pcs.
      The first test sample (plate) will consist of 2 pieces, each 12 mm in thickness.
      The second test sample (pipe) will consist of 2 pipes made of carbon steel. Pipe diameter: 159 mm. Wall thickness: 10 mm.
    • Module 2. Shielded metal arc welding of metal structures.
      It Is required to carry out shielded metal arc welding of metal pieces.
      Sample description: non-tight structure consisting of plates and pipes.
      Size: total dimensions of the occupied space are around 350x350x400 mm.
      Sheet thickness: 10 mm.
      Pipe wall thickness: 8 … 10 mm.

    The RESULT: welded structure of a pressure tank needed for installation of delivery pipelines.

    TIME TO EXECUTE THE MISSION: 2 days (17 hours).

    EVALUATION: shall be carried out according to the technological process sequence (as per modules’ sequence) an shall be based on the welding job quality (high quality of assembly works, welded joints; geometry, and lack of welded joint defects).

    Individual nomination: “Secondary Switching Electric Installation”

    COMPETITORS (active company employees and students):

    The RESULT: mounted electric motor control wiring.

    • Module 2. Mounting of a terminal box (TB) and button control stations (BCS).
    • Module 3. Installation of cable structures, electrical outlets, and an electric motor.
    • Module 4. Mounting of power circuits, inner and outer secondary control circuits, and alarm system.

    EVALUATION shall be carried as follows:

    INDUSTRIAL FACILITY ENGINEERING

    Individual nomination: “Building Information Modelling”

    COMPETITORS (active company employees, student, and independent competitors): data modeling specialists.

    The RESULT: technical assignment with regard to development of the project data model, summary model, and visualization.

    TIME TO EXECUTE THE MISSION: 2 days (17 hours).

    The MISSION

    This task has “counter” background: it is required to recover the technical assignment referring to development of the Art School No.1 information model. Site address: 9 Musy Dzhalilya Street, Almetyevsk, the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.

    Input data:

    • Information model of the project provided in the IFC2x3 format;
    • Project documentation;
    • Sketchy data on business scenarios (UseCases).

    Tasks:

    • to make the summary project model;
    • to structurize business scenarios out of loose documents, and develop reports and data sheets on their base;
    • to restore the EIR (Employer Information Requirements) based on the data taken from the model;
    • to restore the BEP (BIM Execution Plan);
    • to correct the mistakes discovered in the project solutions with regard to collisions;
    • to arrange dynamic visualization of the project model.

    EVALUATION

    There will be evaluated the following competences:

    The MISSION

    Urgent evaluation of changes with regard to updated Customer’s concept. Project title: “Reconstruction of the Building to be Adapted for the Art School No. 1”. Site address: 9 Musy Dzhalilya Street, Almetyevsk, the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.

    Input data:

    • Information model of the project provided in the IFC2x3 format;
    • Project documentation;
    • Contract estimate;
    • work schedule as of the current date.

    Tasks:

    • to evaluate changes provided by the Customer with regard to the cost and period of construction by means of correction of information model, interrelated estimate data and work schedule;
    • to correct mistakes discovered in project solutions with regard to collisions;
    • to carry out analysis of solutions with regards to job performance;
    • to compare possible construction methods by means of providing of qualitative changes of natural value;
    • explain the efficiency and accuracy of the selected solutions to the Customer during the personal presentation.

    EVALUATION: shall involve the quality of provision of data with regard to actual changes, availability of interrelated data and model, actual data on the cost, provision of the data to the investment project leaders, who will take it as a reference when making decisions.

    The MISSION:

    Implementation of the architectural and structural project of a one-storey two-aisle building with composite frame:

    1) Building plan at el. 0.000 with specification of main building dimensions, aisle/ wall dimensions, references of elements to coordinate axes, applicable elements, and room schedule.

    2) Development of longitudinal and lateral sections of the building with specification of loadbearing structures, envelopes, relative elevations with regard to the levels of structures, floors, beam undersides, girders, roofing (including descriptions of roofing and flooring structures), and other structural elements.

    3) Collection of the data on structural loads (development of the calculation sheet with specification of all loads affecting the building).

    4) Development of the dimensional finite element model of the building, provide the frame deformation layout caused by the most ineffective load combination (in the calculation sheet).

    5) Determination of rated forces with regard to the most loaded reinforced concrete column, its foundation, and roof girder. Specification of the obtained data in the calculation sheet.

    6) Development of the calculation sheet with regard to the following:

    • the most loaded reinforced concrete column;
    • column foundation;
    • coursed roof girder of the “Molodechno” type.

    7) Development of the KM drawings: points of loading of the roof girder to the columns and connection joints of girder assemblies.

    8) Development of KZH drawings of the reinforced concrete column and its foundation.

    9) Obtaining of the calculation and design of an inner stand unit located in one of the building spans with regard to static and dynamic loads.

    EVALUATION

    Evaluation shall be carried out with reference to every elements of the building based on the existing assessment criteria: qualitative and quantitative ones.

    • Specialists dealing with low current system engineering (firefighting automation, fire alarms, and warning systems);
    • Electric supply (over 1000V) specialists (primary switching, relay protection, and automation);
    • Specialists dealing with utilities systems’ automation engineering with regard to capital construction sites.

    The RESULT: developed and completed project solutions represented as text and graphic documents.

    • Module 2. Engineering calculations;
    • Module 3. Selection and checkup of equipment and materials;
    • Module 4. Feasibility study;

    EVALUATION: The criteria include quantitative and qualitative metrics. The quantitative metrics allow determining scope of works performed by each competitor during the competition time, while the qualitative metrics allow evaluating the level of implementation. A combination of these criteria indicates qualification levels of each competitor with regard to engineering activities. Evaluation criteria are divided into specific interrelated groups, or modules.

    COMPETITORS (active company employees, independent competitors, and students).

    • Specialists dealing with heat/gas supply and ventilation systems’ engineering with regard to capital construction;
    • Specialists dealing with water supply and water disposal systems’ engineering with regard to capital construction.

    The RESULT: developed and completed project solutions represented as text and graphic documents.

    • Module 4. Stakeout of project data within the local coordinates system.

    EVALUATION

    Basic criteria:

    • proficiency in different methods and technologies with regard to topographic mapping involving the use of electronic total stations and satellite-aided equipment;
    • arrangement of field geodetic surveys within the stakeout stage;
    • determination of positions of compilation survey points at the terrain through the use of land-based and satellite-aided methods;
    • proficiency in elevation adjustment;
    • proficiency in geometric processing;
    • use of specialized field software;
    • selection of optimal methods and ways while resolving engineering and geodetic problems, and maintenance of safety measures;
    • keeping accuracy of geodetic measurements and high quality of geodetic problem resolving;
    • allocation of the functions among the related team and optimal time management.

    The MISSION

    • Development of the local cost estimate based on the detailed design documentation represented to competitors as drawings, data sheets, and design notes.
    • Calculation shall be carried out by means of the input method through the use of the unique pricing method that has been developed specifically for the Championship.
    • The methodology includes the costing standards database, totals calculation rules, actual price lists for resources, quantity estimate rules, and other specific aspects.
    • The methodology applied to development of the local cost estimate is based on the provisions that do not contradict to the pricing systems adopted by the Championship member countries.
    • Optional: application of data modeling when developing the cost estimate (those participants who select this option will be granted with the right to execute this mission in the Renga BIM system and the ABC cost estimation system developed specifically for the Championship).
    • Those competitors who apply data modeling technologies will be charged with an extra coefficient (1.2) to be summed up with their results.

    EVALUATION: Evaluation will involve amount of works done, and this is going to be critically important when final scores calculating. Each individual cost estimate line will be analyzed by a number of criteria, and this will provide high accuracy of task execution assessment. Anonymity of test results’ check will ensure fairness of the scores.

    The RESULT: completion of different task blocks will include the prepared forms specifying problem resolution, free-form answers to the questions related to operation with different documents, official-form answers supplied with data lists related to the tasks, filling in standard documents when discovering any deviations related to real jobs performed within the site, etc.

    • Task 1. Check of the knowledge regarding inspection jobs during the incoming, operating, and acceptance control.
    • Task 2. Evaluation of causes for defects/damages of building structures.
    • Tasks 3 and 5. Checkup of skills and competences within construction supervision and recording of discovered deviations within the construction site.
    • Task 4. Checkup of skills and competences within discovering deviations in as-built documentation prepared within the construction site.
    • Task 6. Determination of the scope of the as-built documentation.
    • Task 7. Analysis of the project documentation within P and DDD phases.
    • Task 8. Implementation of the blitz analysis of project, material/ engineering and as-built documentation and actual activities within the site as per specified task with further provision of grounds for the related solution.

    EVALUATION: Criteria are divided into subject matter groups, which are aimed to assessment of competences related to knowledge and skills within correct application of requirements to the quality of construction products at different stages of capital construction site life cycle.

    WINNER: A competitor having implemented maximum number of tasks with minimum amount of mistakes and comments according to evaluation criteria, achieving most of the scores after implementation of the mission and taking the first place within the multi-team nomination rating.

    Competitors arranged in project teams shall implement the crosscutting assignment with regard to management of a construction project within the conditions that will be very close to the real ones with the use of project management tools represented as a simulation of construction project management processes.

    • Task 1. Project content formation.
    • Task 2. Development of project activity progress chart.
    • Task 3. Project cost evaluation.
    • Task 4. Arrangement of the current budget and financing schedule.
    • Task 5. Entry of actual project data.
    • Task 6. Analysis and forecasting of project realization results according to the earned value methodology (EVM). Development of corrective actions in order to achieve project established parameters.
    • Task 7. Occurrence of a risk event. Arrangement of anti-risk measures. Correction of the current activity progress chart package, current budget, and financing schedule with consideration of corrective and anti-risk actions.
    • Task 8. Entry of actual data related to the period with consideration of the corrective actions. EVM-based analysis. Development of the final report with consideration of the deviations.

    EVALUATION

    Evaluation shall consider three main criteria: COMPLETENESS of task implementation, implementation DEADLINES, and QUALITY of task implementation. When evaluating task implementation deadlines, it is necessary to apply the principle of equal opportunities with regard to DEADLINES, which means that each of 8 teams shall start their tasks at the same time. This will provide each team with the opportunity to catch up with the leader and get extra scores for speed of tasks’ execution. When evaluating task implementation deadlines, it is also necessary to apply the principle of equal opportunities with regard to QUALITY.

    Every of 8 tasks will be attributed with the reference answer provided with clear and definite explanation that will enable to assess the quality of each task implementation with the maximum level of impartiality.

    Expert Juries

    Expert Juries are those persons, who possess the knowledge, professional competence, qualifications, and industrial and practical know-hows. They represent each nomination of the World Construction Championship.

    Expert Juries are to determine the level of Participants’ professional skills and practical knowledge and evaluate their tasks’ execution in each nomination.

    Expert Juries of the World Construction Championship will be represented by those specialists of the participating companies, in case they correspond to the competence requirements, provided in the Regulations on the Work of the Expert Jury World Construction Championship.
